Just like your closet, wardrobe and car need special spring cleaning attention, so does your makeup bag. As we enter cleaning season, we have to talk about re-organizing that makeup cabinet. It will help you gain a fresh start to the warm weather, and you may even find some stuff you forgot you had! Start out with these tips for your makeup spring cleaning.
- Lay out each of your products.
Just empty that bag (or cabinet, if you're lucky!) completely. You may even want to use some cleaner to really spruce it up. Placing each of your products out where you can see them will help you to actually see what you have. That way, you can decide what to throw out and what to keep. *Pro tip: Find a nice brush-cleaning solution and clean up those makeup brushes! According to Elle, we should be washing our brushes every two weeks. Use a dab of almond or olive oil first to break down the extra clumpy ones!
- Check the expiration dates.
Did you know that your makeup can expire just like food? The expiration dates might not be as clear, but don't worry ... we've got you. Here are some common expiration dates to keep in mind:
- Mascara: 2-3 months (not long at all!)
- Foundation & Concealer: 6-12 months. I know that's a huge time gap, but you can tell that an item's expired if it's separating or if the color is getting lighter.
- Lipstick & Lip Gloss: 1-2 years. Much longer … whew!
- Eyeshadow: 2 years!
- Store your makeup for easy access.
Try using clear makeup cases so that you can easily see each of your products. This will help you to use it all up before it expires and gets wasted! Designate a convenient place with easy access to store everything, instead of stowing it all away somewhere where you could forget what you have. Try categorizing by brand, size or type of makeup. *Pro tip: Throw out your stinky old bag if it's falling apart or filthy from wear and tear. Bustle has a lot of cool ideas for extra organized makeup spaces. For example, try this shoe organizer tip, or a bookcase full of clear organizing containers!
